BOXING SCIENCE

An Art
The systematic formulation of intrinsic facts, principles, and guidelines of applied personal defensive skills through utilisation of the fists is the science and Art of Boxing.

The objective of Boxing as a sport is a subjective matter to participant's and onlookers alike due to their viewpoint and knowledge base. The scoring rules of boxing codes have both boxers commencing each round with 10 or 20 points that decrease proportionately when a boxer is judged to have failed to defend punches to their target area. It is therefore the failure to defend punches that cause boxers to lose whilst winning requires the necessity to score.

'We don't know how hard something is until we try it,
and don't know what we don't know until we learn something.'

The boxing beginner practising at punching a bag often feels confident enough to spar with someone else because they are able to punch. The begiiners success in sparring will be dependant on their punching but lack of success will be due to their failing to defend the opponent's. The beginner may think and be told that they would of done better if they had thrown more punches, but a knowledgeable assessment would be that the implementation and acquirement of a defence capability would be a more positive approach to future success and sports enjoyment

The thought when defending punches is to duck, slip, and weave as do skilled boxers with many years of experience and training. The major problem and stumbling block if this route of learning is pursued is that the beginner does not initially have the experienced boxers anticipation, and timing, and may never acquire the subtle body movement skills to avoid being hit and score in return.

Unlike the previous high skill acquisition requiremnent only a small amout of time is required for any begginer to learn how to hold their hands and arms up to shoulder height for service as a barrier defence. The legs allow positional choice and in co-ordination with the hands and arms provide a defence or attack movement capability.
